Design Matters

“Try to assess each element of your service or product and better it — to see design not just as a marketing thing but as a genuine source of competitive advantage, customer and employee satisfaction and, lastly, a route to higher profits.” – Adam Swann, Welcome to the Era of DesignForbes

“Our client was very impressed with the illustrations Laura did for us. He plans to have more drawings done in the future.” – Robert Turchick, owner, YipDogStudios

About

Laura Thorn Apatini

W

ith over 15 years of experience in graphic design and art direction, I’ve done a little bit of everything related to marketing and design. In addition to a long history with print media – newspaper, magazine, catalogs, signage, promotional brochures and flyers – I have developed a love for illustration and branding work, and am excited to be branching out into more web-based and digital media design.

  • VERSATILE
  • PATIENT
  • DEDICATED
  • Always willing and able to learn on the job

I came to graphic design through family tradition (daughter of a fine artist) and through publishing, which means I began my career working with type and page layout. As the needs of my employers changed, I grew with their organizations, learning new software and file structures as the need arose.

I’ve worked for book and magazine publishers (ad production, ad schedule management, copy editing, proofreading, page layout, cover design, and even trade shows), for a home decor manufacturer (signage, point-of-purchase displays, packaging, photo shoot direction), for a home builder in a major metropolitan area (collateral, signage, billboards, and lots of print ads), and now, finally, for myself.

I’ve learned from every project I’ve ever participated in, from every drawing, from every client interaction. While I consider myself ready to learn new skill sets, and big ones, at a moment’s notice, I do not do coding or programming. I can, however, supply words and images for any project, including online endeavors. In addition to creating psd comps for site designs, I can work with WordPress and HTML templates to design and maintain simple sites, and I have a fair amount of experience creating web graphics and simple animations. I’m currently working to expand my multimedia and interactive capabilities.

Finally, my master’s in English Literature and broad-based education, experience and interests mean that I add value to every client collaboration, always striving to deliver more than required.
